Taming the Visionary: Part I – 4 Buckets to Channel Big Ideas
Managing Visionary Ideas Without Derailing Your Level 10 Meetings™
Do you have a visionary who tends to hijack your Level 10 Meetings™ with a flood of ideas? While their creativity is invaluable, it can sometimes stall decision-making and frustrate the team. Fortunately, there’s a better way to harness their innovative spirit without disrupting your meeting agenda.
Introducing the Ideation Session
Before your team is ready for the Same Page Meeting, consider implementing an ideation session. This is a dedicated space outside of the Level 10 Meeting™ where the visionary can explore their ideas with a small group of trusted team members. Here’s how it works:
Setting Up the Session
Schedule a 30 to 60-minute session weekly or biweekly. Invite the visionary and two to three committee members to participate. This creates a focused environment where ideas can be discussed and categorized effectively.
Categorizing Ideas
During the ideation session, help the visionary categorize their ideas into four distinct buckets:
1. Immediate Application
These are ideas that can be applied today and seamlessly integrate into current operations. Move these to the leadership Level 10 Issues List for immediate action.
2. Long-Term Consideration
Some ideas are great but not urgent. Place these on the long-term issues list to revisit at the end of the quarter.
3. Further Ideation Needed
For ideas that are intriguing but not yet actionable, keep them on the ideation list. Continue discussing them in future sessions until they fit into another category.
4. The Brown File
Not every idea will be a fit. Place those that don’t align with current goals into the ‘brown file.’ They can be revisited in the future if circumstances change.
Protecting Your Level 10 Meeting™
By providing a dedicated space for ideation, you protect the integrity of your Level 10 Meeting™ while still valuing the visionary’s contributions. This approach ensures that meetings remain focused and productive, driving your business forward.
